Hormones: The Inside Story

THE CHALLENGE

The UK home for hormone science – the Society for Endocrinology – wanted to inform the public and address misconceptions about the wide-ranging roles that hormones play in all aspects of human life.

While their You and Your Hormones website does a good job at bringing the complex science of endocrinology to life for students and teachers, they didn’t have a platform for the society’s members to communicate with the broader interested public.

The society asked us to create their first ever podcast series aiming to explore the science of hormones and tackle misconceptions in an engaging way.

OUR APPROACH

Using our podcasting and storytelling expertise, we delivered three series of Hormones: The Inside Story – a limited run podcast with six episodes per series. We worked closely with the society to develop stories for each episode, and ultimately produce a podcast that they are truly proud of.

Audience-informed format

Each episode sets up an intriguing question at the top of the show that is answered by several experts as the story unfolds.

This opening hook provides an easy entry point into topics that may otherwise appear inaccessible to a non-scientific audience, such as thyroid dysfunction, circadian rhythms or the ins-and-outs of the hormone stress response.

Intricate soundscape

Comprehensive sound design enhances each episode.

By blending narrative storytelling and interviews with evocative music and sound effects, the podcast keeps the listener engaged as we explore the complex world of endocrinology.

FINDING THE RIGHT TONE & TOPICS

The show does not shy away from challenging and thought-provoking topics.

Using an upbeat and sometimes humorous tone that keeps the audience entertained, we explore issues such as the lack of diversity in science, diabetes stigma, medical disinformation or even distressing low libido.

VARIED CAST

The podcast features a diverse cast of experts of varied career paths, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, nationalities and genders, reflecting the diversity within the Society for Endocrinology and the field more broadly.
